After applying a dose of Zymaxid, it is important that you wash your hands. You should also wash your hands before applying the medication and avoid touching the tip of the dropper to any surfaces. These precautionary measures will help prevent the spread of infection. In addition, you cannot wear your contacts during treatment with Zymaxid, which should last about a week.
An Introduction to Dosing With ZymaxidThe dose of Zymaxid™ (gatifloxacin) your healthcare provider recommends will depend on the severity of your infection. As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
Zymaxid Dosage for Bacterial ConjunctivitisThe standard Zymaxid dose for bacterial conjunctivitis (pink eye) is one drop in the infected eye every two hours while awake (up to eight times a day) on day one, and then one drop two to four times a day on days two through seven. The amount is the same for adults and children.
General Information on Using ZymaxidSome considerations to keep in mind during treatment with Zymaxid include the following:
- This medication comes as an ophthalmic solution (eye drop). It is normally used two to eight times a day, usually for seven days.
- Zymaxid is applied to the eye. To use it, tilt your head back and gently pull the lower lid of your eye down to form a pocket. Place the drops into this pocket.
- Wash your hands thoroughly before and after dosing with Zymaxid to help prevent the spread of infection.
- Try to avoid touching the tip of the bottle to any surface, including your eyes and fingers. This will help keep the medication free from germs.
- Do not wear contacts while using Zymaxid. Ask your healthcare provider when you may wear contacts again.
- This medication is meant for use in the eye. Do not take it by mouth.
- You should begin to feel better within a few days of starting Zymaxid. However, use this medication for as long as your healthcare provider prescribes. Stopping it too soon may cause your symptoms to return or lead to antibacterial resistance.
- For the medication to work properly, it must be used as prescribed.
