What Is Zymar Used For?

Zymar® (gatifloxacin) is an antibiotic eye drop licensed to treat bacterial conjunctivitis, an eye infection commonly called "pink eye." It is only used when a person's conjunctivitis is caused by bacteria. Zymar will not cure a case of conjunctivitis that is caused by viruses.

Zymar belongs to a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones, or "quinolones" for short. It works to kill infection-causing bacteria by interfering with DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes necessary for the survival and reproduction of the bacteria.
