Zymar® (
gatifloxacin) is a prescription antibiotic approved to treat bacterial conjunctivitis, commonly called "
pink eye." It comes in the form of an eye drop that is typically used for seven days. It is currently sold as a brand-name drug only.
Why is there no generic for Zymar? The answer is not entirely clear, as the first patent for Zymar has already expired. It's possible that another patent (set to expire in 2016) is protecting the drug from generic competition. If this is the case, generic versions will likely become available after this patent expires.
