Can You Use Zymar for Pink Eye?

Conjunctivitis ("pink eye") is a highly contagious eye condition that can cause symptoms like:

  • Pinkness or redness in the affected eye or eyes
  • Eye(s) that are crusted over or "stuck shut" in the morning
  • Eye itching or burning.

It can be caused by different types of infections, including viruses and bacteria. If you have pink eye that is caused by bacteria, your healthcare provider may recommend Zymar® (gatifloxacin), a prescription eye drop that is used for seven days. The medication is approved for use in adults and children as young as one year old. It is generally well tolerated (the most common side effects include eye irritation and blurry vision).

Keep in mind that that you can only use Zymar for bacterial pink eye; the medication will not cure a viral infection.
