Generic Tobradex

Although there are no generic versions of Tobradex (tobramycin and dexamethasone) ointment available at this time, there is a generic form of the suspension (eye drops). The FDA has assigned the generic suspension an "AB" rating, which means it is considered equivalent to the brand-name medication. However, generic medications may contain different inactive ingredients than the brand-name drug.

Is There a Generic Version of Tobradex?

Tobradex® (tobramycin and dexamethasone) is a prescription eye medication. It comes in the form of an eye ointment and an eye suspension (drops). Tobradex contains a steroid (for reducing inflammation) and an antibiotic (for treating or preventing infections).

Tobradex is manufactured by Alcon Laboratories, Inc. Tobradex suspension (but not the ointment) is available in generic form.

Availability of Generic Tobradex

Like brand-name Tobradex, generic Tobradex suspension is available in one strength, with 0.3 percent tobramycin and 0.1 percent dexamethasone.

At this time, it is unclear why no generic manufacturers have chosen to make a generic version of Tobradex ointment. Perhaps it is not financially feasible to do so.

It should be noted that there is another strength of Tobradex suspension (known as Tobradex ST) that was approved in 2009. This product contains a lower strength of dexamethasone (0.05 percent). However, this product is not commercially available at this time, in either brand-name or generic form.

Who Makes It?

Generic Tobradex is made by the following generic manufacturers:

  • Falcon Pharmaceuticals
  • Bausch & Lomb.
