Maxidex Uses

If you have swelling of the eyes and eyelids, your healthcare provider may prescribe Maxidex. This medication is specifically used to treat inflammation caused by several eye problems, including pink eye caused by allergies, inflammation of the cornea, or eye injuries. This eye drop is only approved for use in adults age 18 and older. There are currently no off-label uses for Maxidex.

What Is Maxidex Used For?

Maxidex® (dexamethasone ophthalmic suspension) is a prescription eye drop that belongs to a class of medications called corticosteroids, or just "steroids" for short. It is used to treat inflammation of the eyes and eyelids caused by certain infections, injuries, or eye conditions.
Some of the eye problems Maxidex may be used to treat include:
  • Allergic conjunctivitis (pink eye caused by allergies)
  • Acne rosacea
  • Keratitis (inflammation of the cornea)
  • Iritis (inflammation of the iris)
  • Injury to the cornea from chemicals, radiation, burns, or something that gets into the eye.

How Does Maxidex Work?

Like other corticosteroids, Maxidex works by reducing inflammation. It also interferes with the body's normal immune response, which can slow down or delay healing. This can be a problem if an infection is present, or if there is a risk for infection.

Can Children Use Maxidex?

This medication is not approved for use in children younger than 18 years of age, as it has not been adequately studied in this age group.

Can Older Adults Use It?

Maxidex can be used in older adults. Older adults are not expected to respond any differently to this medication than other age groups.
