Generic Maxidex

Although all patents for Maxidex (dexamethasone ophthalmic suspension) have expired, no company has chosen to make a generic version. It is not clear as to why no generic Maxidex products are available. However, there is a dexamethasone ophthalmic solution available. Although it comes in a different form (a solution rather than a suspension), it is used to treat many of the same eye conditions as Maxidex.

Can I Buy Generic Maxidex?

Maxidex® (dexamethasone ophthalmic suspension) is a prescription eye drop used to reduce inflammation and swelling associated with certain eye conditions. It belongs to a class of medications called corticosteroids, or just "steroids" for short.
Maxidex is made by Alcon Laboratories, Inc. Although the patents for Maxidex have expired, there are no generic versions currently available.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

It is not entirely clear why companies are not making a generic version of Maxidex. It could be that the demand for this medication is so small that a generic manufacturer would not make a profit from a generic version of the drug.
Because it is unknown why generic Maxidex is not yet available, it is impossible to predict when, or if, a manufacturer will choose to make a generic version of the eye medicine.

Is Dexamethasone a Generic Maxidex?

No -- dexamethasone is the active ingredient in Maxidex (as well as in several other prescription medications), but is not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."
The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
