Eyes Home > Zymaxid Side Effects
In clinical studies that looked at possible side effects of Zymaxid, the most commonly reported problems included eye irritation and eye pain. Increased tearing, dry eye, and blurred vision are also possible. Some side effects of this drug are potentially serious and require medical attention, such as signs of an allergic reaction or eye irritation and redness that becomes worse with continued use.
An Introduction to Zymaxid Side EffectsJust like any medicine, Zymaxid™ (gatifloxacin) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Zymaxid. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)
Common Side Effects of ZymaxidZymaxid has been studied thoroughly in clinical trials. In these studies, one group of people received Zymaxid, while another group was given a placebo eye drop (an eye drop with no active ingredients). As a result, it was possible to see what side effects occurred, how often they appeared, and how they compared to the placebo.
In these studies, the most commonly reported Zymaxid side effects, occurring in at least 1 percent of people, included:
- Eye irritation
- Eye pain
- An unpleasant taste
- Worsening of conjunctivitis.
Other Possible Side EffectsProblems that occurred in studies with other gatifloxacin ophthalmic (eye) products may also be possible with Zymaxid. (Gatifloxacin is the active ingredient in Zymaxid.) These reactions may include:
- Increased tearing
- Keratitis (inflammation of the cornea, which is the clear tissue that covers the front of the eye)
- Papillary conjunctivitis, or inflammation and tiny bumps on the lining of the eyelids
- Swelling of the eyelids and eye area
- Broken blood vessels in the eyes
- Dry eye
- Eye discharge
- Blurred vision.
