Generic versions of Voltaren Ophthalmic (diclofenac eye drops) are currently available. These medications are made by several manufacturers, including Alcon Laboratories and Bausch & Lomb. The FDA has assigned all forms of generic Voltaren Ophthalmic with an "AT" rating, which means they are considered equivalent to the brand-name medication. However, the generics may contain different inactive ingredients than the brand-name drug.

Is a Generic Version of Voltaren Ophthalmic Available?

Voltaren Ophthalmic® (diclofenac eye drops) is a prescription eye medication typically used after certain eye surgeries. It is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

Brand-name Voltaren Ophthalmic is made by Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. The patents for this medication have long expired, and generic versions are available.

Who Makes Generic Voltaren Ophthalmic?

A few different manufacturers make generic Voltaren Ophthalmic, including (but not limited to):

  • Akorn, Inc.

  • Bausch & Lomb.

Are Generic Diclofenac Eye Drops as Good as Voltaren Ophthalmic?

All generic medications must undergo certain tests to compare them to brand-name medications. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) then looks at these tests to decide if the generics are equivalent to the brand-name medications and assigns a rating to each one. An "AT" rating means that the FDA has determined that a generic medication is equivalent to a brand-name medication.

All of the generic diclofenac eye drops currently available have an "AT" rating, which means they should be equivalent to Voltaren Ophthalmic.

However, generic medications are allowed to have different inactive ingredients than the brand-name medication. This might include fillers, dyes, or other ingredients that may cause problems for people with allergies or sensitivities.
