Eyes Home > Macular Hole Symptoms

Macular hole symptoms often begin gradually and become more severe as the disease progresses. For example, an early macular hole symptom is straight lines that look crooked or wavy. A late-stage macular hole symptom is the loss of most of your central vision. People who believe they may have macular hole symptoms should see their eye doctor right away.

An Introduction to Macular Hole Symptoms

Macular holes often begin gradually. The severity of macular hole symptoms will depend on the size of the hole and its location on the retina.

Early Macular Hole Symptoms

With early macular hole symptoms, people may notice a slight distortion or blurriness in their straight-ahead vision. Straight lines or objects can begin to look bent or wavy. Reading and performing other routine tasks with the affected eye becomes difficult.

Late-Stage Macular Hole Symptoms

As a macular hole progresses to stage III, symptoms can include:

  • Loss of most central and detailed vision
  • Detached retina, a sight-threatening condition that should receive immediate medical attention.

Summary of Macular Hole Symptoms

These possible macular hole symptoms are not always a sure sign of a macular hole. Other conditions can cause these symptoms. If you have possible macular hole symptoms, you should see your healthcare provider so that the problem can be diagnosed and treated as quickly as possible.
