Eyes Home > Lutein Benefits
Lutein is supposedly useful for a variety of uses. Some of the potential benefits of lutein include treating and preventing several eye problems (such as macular degeneration and cataracts), preventing diabetes, and preventing cancer. However, many of the claimed benefits were found through studies that looked at obtaining this substance through dietary means rather than with supplementation.
Possible Benefits of LuteinLutein is claimed to be beneficial for a few different purposes. Some of these uses include:
- Preventing and treating age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
- Preventing cataracts
- Preventing diabetes
- Preventing heart disease
- Treating retinitis pigmentosa
- Preventing cancer, including breast cancer and colon cancer.
People usually associate lutein with benefits for the eyes, and some of the major "eye vitamin" products available contain it. Many multivitamins also now contain a low dose of lutein, although it is thought that this amount is probably too low to truly be beneficial.
It is important to understand that many of the claimed lutein benefits were found in studies that looked at a high intake of lutein through the diet, not through supplementation. Supplementation might not be as effective as increasing lutein intake through the diet by eating more fruits and vegetables.
