People with cystic fibrosis may not absorb lutein supplements as well as people without this condition. Other safety concerns with lutein apply to women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. In addition, it is important to choose a supplement made by a reputable and trustworthy manufacturer.

Is It Safe to Take Lutein?

When used appropriately, lutein is probably safe for most people. However, some people may be more likely to experience problems than others. Therefore, you should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking lutein if you:
  • Are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding
  • Have cystic fibrosis.
You should also be sure to tell your healthcare provider about any other medicines you are taking, including prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Specific Lutein Safety Warnings and Precautions

Some warnings and precautions to be aware of concerning the safety of lutein include the following:
  • Lutein is regulated as a dietary supplement. Regulations for dietary supplements are not as rigorous as those for prescription and nonprescription drugs. Make sure to choose a lutein supplement from a reliable manufacturer. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist may be able to recommend one.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is always a good idea to check with your healthcare provider before taking any medication, including dietary supplements (see Lutein and Pregnancy and Lutein and Breastfeeding). At normal dosages, lutein is usually considered safe for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • People with cystic fibrosis may not absorb lutein supplements as well as other people. Before taking this product, check with your healthcare provider about recommended dosing guidelines and suggestions for product selection.
