Eyes Home > What Is Levofloxacin Ophthalmic Solution Used For?

Levofloxacin ophthalmic solution is prescribed for treating bacterial conjunctivitis (also known as pink eye) and corneal ulcers in adults and children. This solution is sold under two brand-names: Quixin (0.5% solution) and Iquix (1.5% solution). Both medications work by interfering with a specific enzyme, which prevents the bacteria from multiplying. Off-label uses of levofloxacin ophthalmic solution include treating other types of bacterial eye infections.

An Overview of Levofloxacin Ophthalmic Solution Uses

Levofloxacin ophthalmic solution (Iquix®, Quixin®) is a prescription eye drop. It belongs to a group of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones, or "quinolones" for short. Quixin is used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis eye infections. Iquix is used to treat corneal ulcers.

Levofloxacin Ophthalmic Solution for Conjunctivitis

Quixin (levofloxacin 0.5% ophthalmic solution) is approved for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis is a medical term used to describe inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva, which is the thin membrane that lines the inner eyelids and whites of the eyes. When the conjunctiva becomes inflamed, it looks pink or red. This is the reason conjunctivitis is commonly referred to as "pink eye."
Although conjunctivitis can be quite uncomfortable, it rarely causes permanent eye damage or vision loss. It is very contagious, however, so prompt medical treatment is important to prevent spreading the infection from one eye to another, or from person to person (see Pink Eye Transmission for more information about how conjunctivitis is spread).
Conjunctivitis can occur in one or both eyes. Common symptoms may include:
  • Pinkness or redness in the affected eye(s)
  • Eye(s) that are crusted over or "stuck shut" in the morning
  • Burning or itching in the eye(s)
  • A gritty or sandy feeling in the eye(s)
  • Watery or thick, clear or colored eye discharge.
Conjunctivitis is usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection. Levofloxacin ophthalmic solution will only treat conjunctivitis caused by bacteria. It will not cure a viral infection.
