Eyes Home > Generic Ciloxan

Although there are generic versions of Ciloxan (ciprofloxacin ophthalmic) liquid eye drops, there are no generic forms of Ciloxan ointment available at this time. It is unknown when, or even if, a generic ointment will be manufactured. The United States Food and Drug Administration has determined that the generic versions of Ciloxan that are currently available are equivalent to the brand-name drug.

Can I Buy Generic Ciloxan?

Ciloxan® (ciprofloxacin ophthalmic) is a topical prescription medication used to treat certain bacterial infections of the eye, including bacterial conjunctivitis (commonly called pink eye) and corneal ulcers. It comes in an ointment and a liquid eye drop. It belongs to a class of medications called fluoroquinolones, or "quinolones" for short.
Ciloxan is made by Alcon Laboratories, Inc. The patents for Ciloxan have expired, and Ciloxan eye drops are available as a generic product.

Available Strengths

Generic Ciloxan is available as ciprofloxacin 0.3% ophthalmic solution. Ciloxan ointment is not available as a generic product.

Who Makes Generic Ciloxan?

Generic Ciloxan eye drops are made by many different companies, including:
  • Bausch & Lomb
  • Akorn, Inc.
  • Hi-Tech Pharmacal Co., Inc.

When Will a Generic Ciloxan Ointment Be Available?

Although Ciloxan ointment is no longer protected by patents, there are no generic versions of this medication available at this time. It is unclear why this is the case. It could be that the demand for this medication is too small for a generic manufacturer to make a generic version. Because it is unknown why a generic version of Ciloxan ointment is not yet available, it is impossible to predict when, or if, a manufacturer will choose to make such a product.
