Eyes Home > Ciloxan and Eye Infection

Available by prescription only, Ciloxan® (ciprofloxacin ophthalmic) is a type of antibiotic used for treating certain bacterial eye infections. Ciloxan comes in the form of a liquid eye drop and an eye ointment. The liquid eye drops are used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis ("pink eye") and corneal ulcers; the ointment is only approved for treating bacterial conjunctivitis.

This antibiotic works by killing certain bacteria that cause infections. It does this by interfering with a certain bacterial enzyme that is necessary for the bacteria to grow and multiply.

Ciloxan is approved for treating eye infections in adults and children. The ointment is approved for use in children as young as two years old, while the liquid eye drop solution is approved for use in children as young as one year old.
