What Should I Do If I Miss a Dose of Brimonidine?

If you do not use your brimonidine as scheduled, use the drops as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not use a double dose of this medication.

How Does Brimonidine Work?

Brimonidine belongs to a group of drugs called alpha adrenergic agonists (often known as just "alpha agonists"). This eye medication binds to and activates alpha receptors in the eye, causing two important effects. It decreases the amount of fluid (known as aqueous humor) produced by the eye and increases the rate of drainage. These two effects result in lowered eye pressure.

When and How to Use This Medication

Some general considerations include the following:

  • This medication comes in the form of an eye drop. It is used in the affected eye(s) three times daily.

  • If you use other eye drops in addition to brimonidine, make sure to wait at least five minutes between using brimonidine and the other eye medication.

  • In order to prevent contamination of the drops, do not touch the tip of the dropper to any surface, including the surface of the eye or the skin.

  • For original brimonidine, you must remove soft contact lenses before using the eye drops and wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting them, as the preservative can bind to the lenses. This is not a problem with Alphagan P.

  • For the medication to work properly, it must be used as directed.
