Eyes Home > Side Effects of Brimonidine/Timolol

Although it is generally well tolerated, brimonidine/timolol has been known to cause side effects like eye allergies, itching, and burning. In rare cases, potentially serious reactions may also occur. For example, if you experience problems such as a slow heart rate, rapid weight gain, or an unexplained rash, notify your healthcare provider right away.

An Introduction to Side Effects of Brimonidine/Timolol

Just like any medicine, brimonidine/timolol (Combigan®) can cause side effects. However, not everyone who uses the medication will have problems. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or are treated easily by you or your healthcare provider.

(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible brimonidine/timolol side effects. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)

Serious Brimonidine/Timolol Side Effects

Some side effects with brimonidine/timolol, while occurring infrequently, are potentially serious and should be reported immediately to your healthcare provider. These include but are not limited to:

  • Worsening of depression
  • Worsening of Raynaud's disease
  • Signs or symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as:

    • Widespread itching or hives
    • An unexplained rash
    • Wheezing or other difficulty breathing
    • Swelling of the mouth, lips, tongue, or throat.

Of course, any eye drop can cause problems (such as an eye infection) if it is contaminated, so be sure to avoid touching the tip of the dropper to any surface, including the surface of the eye. Report any signs of an eye infection (such as severe pain, swelling, or redness) to your healthcare provider right away.
