Eyes Home > Alphagan P

Alphagan P is a prescription medicine used for reducing eye pressure in people with open-angle glaucoma or high eye pressure (ocular hypertension). This medication works to lower eye pressure by decreasing the amount of fluid produced by the eye and increasing the rate of drainage. The drug comes in the form of an eye drop and is used in the affected eye(s) three times daily.

What Is Alphagan P?

Alphagan® P (brimonidine tartrate) is a prescription eye drop. It is approved to treat high eye pressure in people with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension. Alphagan P is different from the older formulation (Alphagan) in that it contains a different preservative (Purite®, instead of benzalkonium chloride).

Who Makes This Medication?

Alphagan P is manufactured by Allergan, Inc.

How Does Alphagan P Work?

Alphagan P belongs to a group of drugs called alpha adrenergic agonists (often known as just "alpha agonists"). Alphagan P binds to and activates alpha receptors in the eye, causing two important effects. It decreases the amount of fluid (known as aqueous humor) produced by the eye and increases the rate of drainage. These two effects result in lowered eye pressure.

When and How to Use It

Some general considerations include the following:

  • This medication comes in the form of an eye drop. It is used in the affected eye(s) three times daily.

  • If you use other eye drops in addition to Alphagan P, make sure to wait at least five minutes between using Alphagan P and the other eye medication.

  • In order to prevent contamination of the drops, do not touch the tip of the dropper to any surface, including the surface of the eye or the skin.

  • For the medication to work properly, it must be used as directed.
