What Is Lutein?

Lutein is a carotenoid pigment found in most living creatures, and is claimed to have several benefits. When used as a supplement, lutein is generally most often used for preventing or treating eye problems, such as:

Lutein is found naturally in the retina and macula of the human eye. It is thought to act as an antioxidant and a filter for blue light, helping to protect the eye tissues from sun damage. Lutein is also found in the bloodstream and in fat deposits.

Supplementation is effective at preventing a lutein deficiency (for people who do not get enough through the diet). Reasonable supplementation (at normal dosages) is probably safe for most people. However, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you have any other health conditions or are taking any other medicines, including prescription and nonprescription medications, herbs, and vitamins.
