Lutein and Pregnancy

Can I Take Lutein While Pregnant?

Whether consumed through the diet or taken as a dietary supplement, lutein appears to be safe for use during pregnancy. It is unknown whether high doses (higher than might normally be consumed through a normal diet) are also safe. The high end of normal for intake through the diet is about 7 mg to 12 mg per day.
Lutein is not a standard ingredient in prenatal vitamins, although a few prenatal vitamins on the market do contain this product.
If you are pregnant, it is always a good idea to have a discussion with your healthcare provider before taking any medication or supplement, including lutein. Your healthcare provider will consider the benefits and risks of using lutein during pregnancy before making a recommendation in your particular situation.
