Despite the current sterile techniques used for all procedures and the use of antibiotics following LASIK, infections are a possibility. However, based on the latest studies, the likelihood of this occurring is extremely rare -- less than 1 in 1,000 procedures.

 

The seriousness and subsequent treatment options will vary depending on the type of infection. Infections can range from minor ones that only need to be treated with antibiotics to a major infection requiring surgery. Serious vision loss is also a possibility with a major infection. If an infection does develop, your doctor will discuss treatment options and expected outcomes.
