Despite the current sterile techniques used for all procedures and the use of antibiotics following this procedure, infections are a possibility. However, based on the latest studies, the likelihood of this occurring is extremely rare, it is actually less than 1 in 1000.
The seriousness and subsequent treatment options will vary depending on the type of infection. Infections can range from very minor ones that only need to be treated with antibiotics, to a very major infection requiring surgery to treat it. Serious vision loss is also a possibility with a major infection. If an infection does develop, your doctor will discuss the treatment options and expected outcomes.
