Iquix® (
levofloxacin ophthalmic solution) is a prescription eye drop medication used to treat corneal ulcers. It belongs to a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones, or just "quinolones" for short.
Iquix is made by Santen Oy for VISTAKON® Pharmaceuticals, LLC. The patents for this medication have expired. However, it is not yet available in generic form.
When Will Generic Iquix Become Available?
Generic Iquix likely will be available in the near future. The same drug in a lower strength (sold under the name
Quixin®) made by the same manufacturer "went generic" in December 2010, after the patent for the drug expired. Since Iquix and Quixin are covered by the same patent, it does not appear that there is any legal reason preventing generic Iquix from being made.
What About Generic Quixin?
Iquix and Quixin contain the same active ingredient, although in different strengths (1.5% for Iquix and 0.5% for Quixin). Also, they are approved for different uses. For these reasons, they cannot be considered interchangeable drugs.
Generic Quixin cannot be substituted for Iquix. If you cannot afford Iquix, please talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist about more affordable alternatives.
