Restasis
® (
cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion) is available only by prescription and is approved for treating chronic dry eyes, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca. As a type of immunosuppressant, Restasis works to increase tear production by decreasing eye inflammation.
This drug is not appropriate for everyone; your healthcare provider needs complete information on your medical history and what medicines you are taking before prescribing Restasis.
Although many people do not have any problems while taking Restasis, side effects can occur and may include eye redness, itching, and burning. If negative reactions do occur, they tend to be mild and easily treated.
Restasis comes in the form of an eye drop and is used twice daily, with 12 hours between doses. If you wear contact lenses, make sure to take them out before using this medication, and wait at least 15 minutes before putting them back in.
