In the United States, over one million cataract surgeries are performed each year, making this a very common medical procedure. There are two types of cataract surgery, but in both, the natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial one. The majority of people (90 percent) who undergo this procedure have better vision afterward. In most cases, the surgery takes less than an hour, and many people choose to remain awake during the procedure.
