Brimonidine tartrate (
Alphagan®) is available only by prescription and is used to lower eye pressure in people with ocular
hypertension or
open-angle glaucoma. It comes in the form of an eye drop and is used in the affected eye(s) three times daily.
Brimonidine eye drops are not suitable for everyone. For instance, you may not be able to safely use this product if you have certain medical conditions, such as
depression or
heart disease, or if you are taking certain medications. To reduce your risk of problems, tell your healthcare provider about any other medications you are taking, including nonprescription medicines and supplements.
In most cases, people do not experience any problems with these eye drops. However, brimonidine can cause side effects, such as eye redness, burning, and stinging. If negative reactions do occur, they tend to be minor and easily treated.
