A healthcare provider may recommend dorzolamide hydrochloride (
Trusopt®) if you have high eye pressure and one of the following conditions:
- Ocular hypertension (high eye pressure that is not accompanied by changes in vision or damage to the optic nerve, as would happen with glaucoma).
Dorzolamide comes in the form of an eye drop that is applied three times a day. It may be used by itself or, if necessary, combined with other types of
glaucoma treatment.
The eye drops work by inhibiting an enzyme called carbonic anhydrase, which is found in many places throughout the body, including the eye. Inhibiting this enzyme reduces the amount of fluid the eye produces. This, in turn, lowers the pressure within the eye.
Before starting treatment, let your healthcare provider know if you have liver or kidney disease, or any
allergies. Also, make sure to tell your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, thinking of becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding.
