Ciloxan Ophthalmic Ointment

Available as liquid eye drops or an eye ointment, Ciloxan® (ciprofloxacin ophthalmic) is approved to treat bacterial infections of the eye. Specifically, the eye drops are licensed to treat bacterial conjunctivitis (also known as "pink eye") as well as corneal ulcers, while the ointment is only approved to treat pink eye.

This eye medication works by killing bacteria that cause eye infections. It does this by interfering with a bacterial enzyme called DNA gyrase. This enzyme is needed by the bacteria to make DNA, which is important for the bacteria to multiply. Ciloxan does not kill viruses.

Although many people do not have any problems while using this eye medication, Ciloxan can cause side effects, such as eye redness, burning, and itching. If negative reactions do occur, they tend to be mild and easily treated.
