Cataracts are vision problems in which the lens of the eye becomes clouded. There are several types of cataracts; age-related cataracts are the most common form of the condition. Examples of other types of cataracts include secondary cataracts and traumatic cataracts. By age 80, more than half of all Americans either have a cataract or have had cataract surgery. Symptoms of a cataract may include double vision, blurry vision, and frequent prescription changes for eyeglasses or contact lenses. Surgery is often the only available treatment for a cataract. There are over 1 million such surgeries performed each year in the United States.
