Cataract surgery is a very common procedure -- over 1 million are performed each year in the United States. There are two types of surgery, but in both, the natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial one. The majority of people (90 percent) who undergo cataract surgery have better vision afterwards. The surgery usually takes less than an hour, and many patients choose to remain awake during the procedure.
