Can Breastfeeding Women Use Alphagan P?

At this time, it is unknown if Alphagan^® P (brimonidine tartrate) is safe for use in women who are breastfeeding. The manufacturer of Alphagan P recommends that women avoid using this medication while nursing. If you are breastfeeding a child, you should talk with your healthcare provider before using Alphagan P.

 

Safety Issues With Alphagan P and Breastfeeding

No studies have been done to see if Alphagan P passes through breast milk in humans, although it has been shown to pass through breast milk in animal studies.

 

It is important to understand that even though Alphagan P is an eye drop, it is possible that some of the medication may enter the bloodstream and could, therefore, possibly pass through breast milk.

 

With normal use of Alphagan P, it is unlikely that a large amount of the drug would reach the breast milk. However, the possibility of problems cannot be entirely eliminated, as this medication has never been studied in breastfeeding women.

 

If your healthcare provider recommends using Alphagan P while breastfeeding, make sure to watch for any side effects in your child. If you use this medication while breastfeeding, it is probably a good idea to apply pressure (with a finger) to the inside corner of the eye(s) for a minute or more after each dose, to help limit absorption of the drug into the bloodstream. This would decrease the chance of the medication reaching the breast milk.

After considering what you want and expect, as well as your current health situation, the two of you can make a shared decision that is right for you.
